The glacier has has receded 300 metres in the past 10 years - the viewing platform for surveying the glacier would have been under several feet of ice just a few years ago. Today it's on dry land. There's quite a river flowing from underneath it, as you can see. It's very difficult to show the extent of the glacier from the ground, and still bring across a sense of its melting. That's why I used the wide-angle lens!

The dioramas in the Museum of Natural History's Mammal Halls, opened on April 9, 1942, with their precise depictions of geographical locations and the careful, anatomically correct mounting of the specimens, are windows onto a world of animals, their behavior, and their habitats. Moreover, since many of the environments represented have been exploited or degraded, some dioramas preserve places and animals as they no longer exist. More than 25 Museum expeditions, ranging from Mexico to Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic and from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans, produced the magnificent displays in the Hall of North American mammals. James Perry Wilson (1889-1976), a master of artful illusion, painted the backgrounds for many of the dioramas. In addition to accurately capturing every detail, his paintings evoke the intangible feel of the places they depict. This is owed in part to Wilson's dizzyingly precise perspective, one of his signature qualities. In his dioramas the real materials of the foreground merge impeccably with the painted background, uniting the two- and three-dimensional into a seamless whole.

Looking east up the main street of Valdez Alaska. This picture was taken in about 1957, the year I was in 7th grade. Note the glacier in the upper left. In 1964 the big Alaska earthquake occured and the entire town was moved. I doubt if any of these exist any more.

In 1997 I rode a bicycle from Florida to Alaska. I'm posting the story here on flickr. The next day I was glad just to be making some progress as I made my way up the road. I filled up my water bottles at pump station #4, ate some stale peanut butter sandwiches, and continued my journey when I was promptly greeted by some more steep hills.

I was able to acquire a pile of photos taken in Alaska at the end of World War II. Here is one of them. This photo was taken on August, 7, 1946 at Kiska, Alaska, which is located at the western end of the Aleutian Islands. I'm not sure of the name of this cargo ship but see some of the comments below. .

Early morning 1st day of the cruise in Alaska : Alaska is three hours behind Dallas time, so when we got up to Alaska I was ready to get up pretty early. This shot was taken at about 4:30 a.m. Alaska time. Only the crew was up so I wandered around the deck looking at the sights as we traveled up the college fjiord. The items in the water are bergee bits which are just ice chunks that are too small to be icebergs.

This Bald Eagle was at a salmon hatchery in Ketchikan, Alaska. They had TWO that had broken wings and would never fly again. Fortunately, the Bald Eagle is close to being taken off the "endangered" list. I saw several eagles in the wild, but not any worth showing.

Fall Season In Alaska : Hi everyone - I just got back from a couple of weeks in Alaska to shoot the tundra. I got lucky and timed it right as the reds were illuminating everywhere. I was also lucky visiting Denali to see the mountain the whole time I was there. Up to now the mountain had only been visible four times this year. Anyways, I realize this is an iconic image but it means something personally has I have dreamed of seeing this mountain and to see the tundra in red as well.
