The glacier has has receded 300 metres in the past 10 years - the viewing platform for surveying the glacier would have been under several feet of ice just a few years ago. Today it's on dry land. There's quite a river flowing from underneath it, as you can see. It's very difficult to show the extent of the glacier from the ground, and still bring across a sense of its melting. That's why I used the wide-angle lens!

In the in inland passage of lower Alaska, approaching Juneau. It's amazing how these 5-6 thousand foot peaks rise straight up from sea level.

This is another view of lower Alaska, just northwest of Skagway. Although taken just last week you can see there is still ice formation on some of the lakes closer to the coastline. I have a terrible internet connection at my present location, and this took 15 minutes to upload, but to the extent possible I will dive into your streams tonight while watching the Stanley Cup

The dioramas in the Museum of Natural History's Mammal Halls, opened on April 9, 1942, with their precise depictions of geographical locations and the careful, anatomically correct mounting of the specimens, are windows onto a world of animals, their behavior, and their habitats. Moreover, since many of the environments represented have been exploited or degraded, some dioramas preserve places and animals as they no longer exist. More than 25 Museum expeditions, ranging from Mexico to Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic and from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans, produced the magnificent displays in the Hall of North American mammals. James Perry Wilson (1889-1976), a master of artful illusion, painted the backgrounds for many of the dioramas. In addition to accurately capturing every detail, his paintings evoke the intangible feel of the places they depict. This is owed in part to Wilson's dizzyingly precise perspective, one of his signature qualities. In his dioramas the real materials of the foreground merge impeccably with the painted background, uniting the two- and three-dimensional into a seamless whole.

From this dock on Lake Lucille in Wasilla, Alaska, I'm pretty sure I could see Sarah Palin's sea plane. Does that qualify me to be a bush pilot? You betcha! ;) (This image was taken well after sunset, hence the blue cast. The dappled light on the tree trunk is from a street light.)

The classic poastcard mountain shot, the kind I always swear I won't take, but it was just so perfectly perfect. :) Rare afternoon of sunshine in Alaska along the Denali Highway. Perfect lake, perfect trees, perfect mountains perfectly reflected. Delish.

Looking east up the main street of Valdez Alaska. This picture was taken in about 1957, the year I was in 7th grade. Note the glacier in the upper left. In 1964 the big Alaska earthquake occured and the entire town was moved. I doubt if any of these exist any more.

Sarah Palin, current - but at the time this photo was taken, future - Governor of Alaska marches in the Chugiak July 4 Parade. She was gladhandling the crowd, and didn't seem to notice the guy with the huge telephoto lens following her for about 400 feet along the parade route. Then she looked up and noticed me, flashing me the look above.

It is the longest Tidewater Glacier in Alaska. The face is 6 miles wide . The ice at the foot is about 400 years old . The Glacier routinely "Calves" off icebergs the size of a ten-story building..
